“PAINTING MOVEMENT. Dario Fo's painting” 82 works by Dario Fo dating from 1940 to 2016, curated by Mattea Fo and Stefano Bertea, open to the public from 30th May 2021 to 9th January 2022.

Pencils, watercolours, sketches on cardboard, large works on canvas or wooden panels, as well as posters from the Rame Fo Archive, reproductions of period photos and documents, stage costumes designed by Dario Fo and then made by the Sartoria Pia Rame can be admired every day from 10am to 10pm.

The exhibition, organised and set up by the “C.T.F.R. srl - Compagnia Teatrale Fo Rame" with the patronage of the "Dario Fo and Franca Rame Foundation" is a collaboration with Castello di Postignano, with the patronage of the Umbria Region, the Province of Perugia and the Municipality of Sellano.

The exhibition catalogue is published by CLEAN Edizioni, edited by Mattea Fo and Stefano Bertea; it contains a foreword by art historian Flavio Caroli and contributions by Carlo Petrini and Mattea Fo.

Mattea Fo and Stefano Bertea, curators of the exhibition state: "The exhibition 'PAINTING MOVEMENT' brings to the public's attention a lesser known aspect of Dario Fo, that of his painting activity. The selection of 82 works, made between 1940 and 2016, highlights the main expressive modes of this “all-round artist” in drawing and painting. Dario Fo began his career as a painter in the 1940s, studying at the Brera Academy with great artists of the time as teachers, including Achille Funi, Marino Marini, Giacomo Manzù and Carlo Carrà. In this context, Fo began relationships and exchanges with fellow artists who were to progress through various tendencies, experimentations and orientations, such as Ennio Morlotti, Bobo Piccoli, the Corrente group, the sculptor Alik Cavaliere, the film director Carlo Lizzani, writers and intellectuals like Elio Vittorini and his friend Emilio Tadini. After leaving academia, Dario Fo matured a personal and individual style whose fruits, enriched by contaminations, suggestions, metaphors, symbolic and dreamlike visions, populate his paintings. Ethics, mankind and feelings, taken from myths and stories, are at the centre of his reflections and, always seen with an ironic and lashing eye, are placed in unusual perspectives and away from any traditional viewpoint; these subjects are expressed with joyful, contrasting and strident colours, always brimming with life. During his life Dario Fo used painting, drawing and the graphic sign to present his ideas to his comrades, from the writing of a text, to music, costumes, direction, choreography and lighting, everything is translates into drawing".
